Lee Vining, CA

About

Tierra Antigua Cafe sits along Lee Vining's main stretch, and it's built its reputation on two things: fair-trade coffee sourced from women coffee farmers, and a breakfast burrito reviewers keep coming back for. Owner Berlin, originally from Guatemala, runs it as a family operation, and the 4.9-star rating across 58 reviews holds up well for a small highway-town cafe.

What to Order

  • Breakfast burritos and sandwiches — the sausage, potato, cheese, and egg combo gets singled out repeatedly
  • Fresh deli sandwiches and paninis, including a chicken panini with a side salad
  • Coffee, smoothies, and a blended chocolate milk that's popular with kids
  • Pastries and baked goods

Good to Know

Hours run 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday through Wednesday and Friday through Sunday; the cafe is closed Thursdays. It's a moderately priced stop, with parking right outside and a view over the surrounding hills from the doorway. Call ahead at (760) 647-5677 if you're timing a stop between drives.

After driving for 2 hours, I was hungry. Stopped by for a bagel and sausage sandwich. Most places, don’t understand what that means, Tierra did! It was refreshing. While it was being freshly made in the back, the server was so kind, came out and asked if I wanted to add any vegetables or anything else added to the sandwich!

Had one of their paninis with salad and one of their specialty coffees. The coffee is good, but the food is amazing. Panini was full of fresh flavors while the salad was probably the freshest tasting salad I have eaten in my life. Even the cucumber and tomatoes were elevated as if they were just picked. Maybe it was a lucky day but I will be back if I am ever driving this way again!
