Lundy Lake
Trout fishing, camping, and a trailhead to the Sierra's best fall color.
About
Lundy Lake sits at 7,800 feet in a glacier-carved canyon about 15 minutes north of Lee Vining — a 100-acre reservoir formed in 1910 when a dam expanded a smaller natural lake. It's serious trout water with a resort-run boat launch, cabins, camping, and a trailhead at the far end leading into some of the Eastern Sierra's best waterfall and fall-color hiking.
Fishing and Camping
Lundy Lake Resort operates mid-May through mid-October with cabins, RV hookups, a boat launch, boat rentals, and a small store; book directly through the resort. The adjacent Lundy Canyon Campground has 36 first-come, first-served sites with restrooms and non-potable water — no reservations taken. Rainbow, brown, and brook trout are stocked in the lake and hold in Mill Creek above it.
Lundy Canyon Trail
Past the lake, the road ends at the Lundy Canyon trailhead, which climbs through wildflower meadows and past a series of cascading waterfalls on Mill Creek toward Lake Helen in the Hoover Wilderness, passing beaver ponds along the way. The canyon's dense stands of quaking aspen are considered the region's fall-color finale, typically peaking from the first to third week of October. Hiking is free, and leashed dogs are welcome.
Getting There
From downtown Lee Vining, go 6.7 miles north on Highway 395 to Lundy Lake Road, then head west roughly 5 miles to reach the lake.
