Siesta Lake

Siesta Lake sits in a shallow bowl right alongside Tioga Road, between Crane Flat and White Wolf in Yosemite's high country. There's no trailhead sign and no formal parking lot — just a scatter of roadside pullouts where you leave the car and scramble down a short, easy slope to the water's edge. On a still morning the lake turns into a genuine mirror, doubling the surrounding lodgepole pines and granite outcrops — the same reflective calm that drew photographer Ansel Adams to shoot it here in the late 1950s.

What to expect

This is a pull-off-and-look stop, not a hike. Skip searching for a picnic table — there isn't one — and instead claim a rock or a stump near the shoreline for a snack break. It's an easy add-on if you're already driving Tioga Road toward Tenaya Lake or Tuolumne Meadows, and a welcome leg-stretch on a long High Sierra driving day.

Best time to visit

Go early. Morning calm gives you the best reflections, since afternoon wind usually ripples the surface. In fall, the shrubs ringing the shore turn red and orange, adding color to the reflected pines. Tioga Road is seasonal — typically open from late spring through fall and closed by snow in winter — so check current road status before you plan a stop here.
