Silver Apron

Silver Apron is where the Merced River spreads across a broad, smooth granite slab and pours into Emerald Pool just upstream of Vernal Fall. You reach it by hiking the Mist Trail or John Muir Trail from Happy Isles, where a footbridge crosses the river right at the apron itself — a natural rest stop and photo point between Vernal and Nevada Falls.

Why It's Prohibited to Enter

The National Park Service bans swimming and wading in both Silver Apron and Emerald Pool, and the area is posted with warning signs. The granite is glass-smooth and coated with a thin film that turns it into a natural water slide — anyone who steps in above the pool risks sliding into hidden rocks or getting swept past the pool's edge and over Vernal Fall. Snowmelt keeps the water cold enough that even strong swimmers tire fast, and an undercurrent at the base is easy to underestimate. People have died here. Admire it from the trail and the footbridge, not from the water.

Getting There

Start at the Happy Isles trailhead and follow the Mist Trail or John Muir Trail up past Vernal Fall; Silver Apron sits along this stretch, just below Nevada Fall. Trail crews periodically restrict or detour sections of the Mist Trail for repair work, so check current park alerts before you go, especially outside the busiest summer weekends.
