Starr King Meadow sits deep in Yosemite's high country south of Half Dome, at the base of Mount Starr King's granite domes. No maintained trail leads directly to the meadow — reaching it means leaving the marked path behind and navigating cross-country with a map, compass, and solid backcountry experience.
Getting There
Start at the signed Mono Meadow trailhead on Glacier Point Road. The maintained Mono Meadow and Mount Starr King Trail descends steeply through wet, muddy ground with log crossings, especially early in the season. Beyond Mono Meadow, hikers headed for Starr King Meadow leave the established tread and travel off-trail through the Illilouette drainage toward the peak's base. A wilderness permit is required for any overnight stay in this backcountry zone.
What to Expect
From a clearing near the east end of Mono Meadow, about a half mile off the main trail, you get open views of the Clark Range, Mount Starr King, and Half Dome — a good preview before committing to the cross-country stretch beyond.
