Big Trees Loop Trail

The Big Trees Loop Trail is a short, flat 0.3-mile loop at the lower end of Mariposa Grove, just past the South Entrance near Fish Camp and Wawona. It's the easiest way in the park to stand among giant sequoias without committing to a real hike — a hard-surfaced, wheelchair-accessible path with boardwalk sections over the wetland areas, benches for resting, and interpretive panels covering sequoia ecology. Most people walk it in 15 to 30 minutes.

Trail Details

The loop starts right at the Mariposa Grove Welcome Plaza area, close to accessible parking, restrooms, and a water-bottle filling station. It's barrier-free from the shuttle stop to the trailhead. Partway around, the Big Trees Loop connects to the longer Grizzly Giant Loop Trail (about 2 miles), which is the route to take if you want to reach the Grizzly Giant sequoia and the California Tunnel Tree — the Big Trees Loop itself stays close to the plaza.

Getting There

• A free shuttle runs from the Welcome Plaza to the grove every 15–20 minutes when the road is open, no reservation needed.
• From roughly December through April, Mariposa Grove Road closes to cars and the shuttle stops running — the road and all trails stay open to hikers, snowshoers, and skiers who walk or ski in.
