Canyon Trail

The Canyon Trail is the switchback descent inside Mariposa's Stockton Creek Preserve, a trail network on the west edge of town where Stockton Creek cuts through the Sierra foothills toward its reservoir. It's one of three route options at the preserve — an easy dirt-road stroll, this moderate canyon descent, and a tougher ridge climb — so you can match the outing to your legs and your afternoon.

What to expect

The preserve's full loop runs about 3.2 miles with roughly 538 feet of elevation gain, rated moderate and taking most hikers 1.5 to 2 hours. The canyon route drops through switchbacks alongside Stockton Creek, passing a seasonal waterfall and a small reservoir before climbing back out. Expect oak-and-manzanita foothill terrain, California poppies in bloom season, and a good chance of spotting deer, quail, and raptors overhead.

Getting there

The trailhead sits on the western side of Mariposa off Trabucco Street. Park near the football field, then walk around the gate and past the water treatment facility to reach the preserve. The land is managed jointly by the Sierra Foothill Conservancy and the Mariposa Public Utility District, protecting the town's water supply while keeping the trails open to hikers.
