Chilnualna Creek Cascades viewpoint

The Chilnualna Creek Cascades viewpoint is a scenic stop on the Chilnualna Falls Trail, reached early in the hike via a steep granite staircase that hugs the creek's left bank near Wawona, a few miles from Fish Camp. You don't need to commit to the full trek to the upper falls to enjoy it — the cascades sit close enough to the trailhead to make a satisfying shorter outing on their own.

What You'll See

Chilnualna Creek tumbles through a sequence of drops here: a few smaller bonus cascades near the start of the trail, a stretch of pools, and a 100-foot cascade further along, all visible from the staircase and rock ledges along the right-hand, hiker-only fork of the trail. The creek continues above toward a 240-foot upper waterfall, though the trail itself doesn't give a clean view of that final drop — the cascades along the way are the real payoff for most people who come here.

Trail Details and Access

The trailhead sits about 1.5 miles north of Wawona on Chilnualna Falls Road, with a small dirt lot (room for roughly twenty vehicles) that's rarely full. From the lot it's a short walk along the road to the actual trail start. Continuing past the cascades all the way to Chilnualna Falls is an 8.4-mile round trip with about 2,300 feet of elevation gain — a fairly strenuous full-day hike, though the cascades themselves make a worthwhile turnaround point for a shorter visit.

Safety Note

Stay back from the creek's edge during spring and early-summer runoff. The granite around the cascades gets slick when wet, and high water can make the trail's stream crossings genuinely hazardous.
