Chilnualna Falls Trail is the longest maintained day hike in Yosemite's southern end, climbing out of Wawona to a run of cascades that the National Park Service rates very challenging. It's an 8.2-mile round trip with 2,400 feet of elevation gain, and most hikers spend 5 to 7 hours on the full climb — plan your day around it rather than squeezing it in.
What to Expect on the Trail
From the trailhead near the end of Chilnualna Falls Road, the path follows Chilnualna Creek before climbing a long series of switchbacks with views back over the Wawona area. You don't have to go far for a payoff: the first cascade is visible about 0.25 miles from the parking area, a reasonable turnaround for hikers who want a shorter outing. The falls themselves run as a series of cascades over open granite, fullest during spring and early summer snowmelt.
