Clouds Rest Bypass Trail

A real trail that routes around Clouds Rest's exposed ridge — not over it.

About

The Clouds Rest Bypass Trail is a short, separately mapped route on the shoulder of Clouds Rest, right where the main trail narrows into its exposed summit ridge. It exists for hikers who'd rather not cross that ridge — but established Yosemite trail guides describe the final ridge crossing to the true summit as unavoidable. The bypass routes around the peak rather than delivering you to the top by a gentler path, so if standing on the actual summit is the goal, the exposed stretch is part of the deal. Either way, the standard route to Clouds Rest delivers some of the biggest scenery in the park, with Half Dome below and the High Sierra crest along the horizon.

Getting to Clouds Rest from Yosemite Valley

Starting from Happy Isles, the route climbs past Vernal and Nevada Falls, through Little Yosemite Valley, then turns north toward Clouds Rest — a long day by any measure. Many hikers split it into an overnight backpack, which requires a wilderness permit, rather than push it in one day. It's noticeably longer than the shorter approach off Tioga Road at the Sunrise Trailhead near Tenaya Lake, which most day hikers use instead. Reaching Clouds Rest itself requires no permit — a contrast to Half Dome's cables and lottery system just across the canyon.

Before You Go

  • The bypass avoids the narrowest ridge scramble, but the surrounding terrain is still high, open granite with real exposure — not a stroll for anyone uneasy with heights.
  • There's little shade near the top. Start early and be off the open granite before afternoon thunderstorms build, which happen regularly in summer.
  • The full Yosemite Valley approach is a long day hike — carry a headlamp in case you finish after dark.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Clouds Rest Bypass Trail let you reach the summit without crossing the exposed ridge?

No. It routes around the peak rather than over it. Established trail guides for Clouds Rest describe the final ridge crossing to the true summit as unavoidable — the bypass is for hikers who'd rather experience this stretch of trail without that exposure, not a shortcut to the top.

Do you need a permit to hike Clouds Rest?

No day-use permit is required to reach Clouds Rest, unlike Half Dome's cables, which require a separate lottery permit. If you camp overnight along the way, such as in Little Yosemite Valley, you do need a wilderness permit.

Which starting point is shorter, Yosemite Valley or Tioga Road?

The Tioga Road approach via the Sunrise Trailhead near Tenaya Lake is significantly shorter than starting from Yosemite Valley at Happy Isles, which adds the climb past Vernal and Nevada Falls before you even reach the Clouds Rest turnoff.

Is any part of the approach exposed even if you take the bypass?

Yes. The bypass avoids the narrow summit ridge specifically, but the surrounding terrain is still open, high-elevation granite with real drop-offs, so this stays a hike for people comfortable with heights and exposure in general.
