Dewey Point Ridge Trailhead

Dewey Point sits on the south rim of Yosemite Valley, a granite overlook with one of the widest views in the park — El Capitan, Cathedral Rocks, and Half Dome all visible across the gorge, with the valley floor spread out far below. There's no road to the point itself; you earn this view on a moderate day hike that starts from Glacier Point Road.

Getting There

The standard summer approach is the McGurk Meadow Trail, which starts along Glacier Point Road. The trail drops through McGurk Meadow, then climbs to meet the Pohono Trail; turn west, toward the Valley, and follow it out to the point. In winter, once Glacier Point Road closes beyond Badger Pass, a separate route from the old ski area reaches Dewey Point on snowshoes or skis instead.

The Hike

Plan on a full round trip of roughly 8 miles with about 1,350 feet of elevation gain, rated moderate. The outbound stretch is gentle and rolling with long flat sections, so the climb sneaks up on you on the way back. Figure four to five hours at a relaxed pace, plus time to sit at the rim.

When to Go

May through October is the reliable window for the McGurk Meadow route, once Glacier Point Road has opened for the season. The rim sits above 7,000 feet, so pack layers — it's noticeably cooler and windier out on the exposed point than down in the Valley, even on a warm afternoon.
