Drug Dome

A quiet Tuolumne Meadows crag for climbers, not a scenic hiking trail.

Yosemite Valley, CA

About

Drug Dome sits in the Tuolumne Meadows area of Yosemite National Park, just west of Fairview Dome, rising to about 9,400 feet. It isn't a hiking destination — despite sitting close to the road, it's one of Tuolumne's more overlooked crags, and its steep north face is built for trad climbers, not casual walkers.

Not a Trailhead

There's no trailhead sign or parking lot here. Climbers pull off at a small dirt turnout on the south side of Tioga Road and follow a use-trail through the woods into a talus field, which gives the first unobstructed look at the north face. Expect loose rock and route-finding, not a groomed path.

Routes on the North Face

  • Oz (5.10d, 5 pitches) — the dome's best-known and most-climbed trad line
  • The Gram Traverse (5.10d, 3 pitches) — a companion route often climbed alongside Oz
  • Acapulco Gold (5.12c, 5 pitches) and High Times (5.13b, 4 pitches) — harder, more committing lines
  • Push It (5.11a) — a sport-climbing option on the same face

Before You Go

Yosemite closes designated nesting cliffs to climbing each year to protect peregrine falcons, typically from March into mid-July, though the specific walls and dates vary — check the park's current climbing closures before planning a trip. Tioga Road itself is also seasonal, generally closed by snow from fall through mid-to-late May, so this crag is really only reachable in summer and early fall.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Drug Dome a hiking trail?

No. It's a rock-climbing crag reached by a use-trail and talus scramble, not a maintained trail for general hiking.

What is Drug Dome's best-known route?

Oz, a five-pitch 5.10d trad climb on the north face, is the dome's most popular and most-climbed line.

How do you get to Drug Dome?

It's off Tioga Road (Highway 120) in Tuolumne Meadows, just west of Fairview Dome. Park at a small dirt pullout and follow the climbers' use-trail through the talus to the base of the north face.

When is Drug Dome accessible?

Only while Tioga Road is open, typically from late May or June through the first fall snowfall. Some Yosemite cliffs also close seasonally each spring for peregrine falcon nesting, so check current NPS climbing closures before you go.
