Fresno Dome Trail

Fresno Dome is the easy win south of Yosemite, a short climb up a bare granite dome in Sierra National Forest that rewards you with a wide-open view of the San Joaquin Valley and the surrounding Sierra Nevada, all without a permit, lottery, or reservation required. It sits a short drive from Fish Camp off Sky Ranch Road, and the out-and-back route to the summit covers about 1.6 miles round trip with roughly 300 feet of elevation gain, closer to an hour’s outing than a full-day commitment.

What to Expect

The trail climbs through mixed conifer forest before opening onto exposed granite near the top, where the path turns into more of a scramble over slickrock than a maintained trail. The summit sits at roughly 7,540 feet and looks out over the forested ridgelines of Sierra National Forest toward the Central Valley on clear days. It is a popular spot for catching sunrise or sunset, and for stargazing after dark, since crowds here are rare even in summer.

Getting There

The trailhead is reached via Sky Ranch Road, a forest road that branches off near Fish Camp, south of Yosemite’s Wawona entrance. Because the route runs through Sierra National Forest, the access road is subject to seasonal closures in winter, so check conditions before heading out if you are visiting outside the summer months. Fresno Dome Campground sits nearby if you would rather turn the hike into an overnight.
