About

Glacier Point Trailhead sits at the parking area for Glacier Point itself, the overlook 3,200 feet above the floor of Yosemite Valley with a straight-on view of Half Dome, Yosemite Falls, and the high country beyond. It's less a single trail than a hub: several of the park's best day hikes start or finish right here, and the drive up is one of the most scenic in the park in its own right.

Trails From the Point

The Four Mile Trail connects Glacier Point straight down to the Valley floor near Sentinel Rock, dropping that same 3,200 feet on a continuous, steep grade — it's the shortest way up or down and one of the more demanding options. The Panorama Trail heads the other direction, a roughly 8-mile descent past Illilouette Fall, Nevada Fall, and Vernal Fall before finishing in the Valley — long, but consistently rated among the best day hikes in Yosemite. From the same trailhead you can also pick up the Pohono Trail along the south rim, or, for a very long day, continue toward Half Dome.

Getting There and When

Glacier Point Road is seasonal — open to cars roughly late May through October or November, and closed the rest of the year under snow. Plowing typically starts around mid-April, so early- and late-season visitors should check current road status before driving up.

Because the Panorama Trail runs right along the tops of Illilouette, Nevada, and Vernal Falls, stay behind railings and out of the water at every overlook — Yosemite's waterfalls carry real current even where the water looks calm.
