Happy Isles

Happy Isles sits at the eastern end of Yosemite Valley, where the paved road stops and the trail system begins. This is Valley shuttle stop 16 — get off here and you're standing at the trailhead for two of the park's defining routes, the Mist Trail and the John Muir Trail. A footbridge crosses the Merced River to the small granite islets that give the spot its name, with a modest nature center just up the path.

Where the Trails Lead

From this junction, the Mist Trail climbs alongside the river toward Vernal Fall and Nevada Fall, while the John Muir Trail heads up through Little Yosemite Valley toward Half Dome and the high country beyond. Both routes gain serious elevation fast — this is the last flat ground you'll stand on before the climbing starts.

Happy Isles Art and Nature Center

A small NPS nature center near the trailhead runs seasonal exhibits and the park's Junior Ranger programs. It's worth a few minutes before you head uphill, especially with kids.

A Landscape Still in Motion

On July 10, 1996, a massive slab of granite broke free from the cliffs above and slammed into the forest near Happy Isles, killing one visitor and injuring several others. It's a stark reminder that rockfall has shaped Yosemite Valley for thousands of years and remains an active hazard — stay on marked trails and don't linger directly beneath exposed cliff faces.
