Harlequin Dome

Harlequin Dome is a south-facing granite dome in Yosemite's high country, directly across Tioga Road from Tenaya Lake and just across from Pywiack Dome in the Tuolumne Meadows area. At roughly 8,891 feet, it's a rock-climbing destination, not a hiking trail — its draw is multi-pitch trad routes on sun-warmed granite, reached by climbers with a rope, rack, and lead experience rather than casual day hikers.

Getting to the Base

Park at the Tenaya Lake parking area on Tioga Road (Highway 120), cross the road, and hike up open granite slabs to a short headwall before picking up a use trail to the base of the dome. This stretch of Tuolumne Meadows is dense with named domes — Stately Pleasure Dome and Pywiack Dome are both close by, and climbers often link more than one in a day.

The Climbing

Harlequin Dome's best-known line is Hoodwink, a 4-pitch, 420-foot 5.10- route first climbed by Jim Bridwell and Roger Breedlove in the early 1970s. The Sting (5.10bR, 4 pitches) shares Hoodwink's opening hand-and-finger crack before splitting off onto its own line. Both routes finish with slab climbing on progressively easier terrain, and the dome's south-facing aspect keeps it warm on days when Tuolumne's north-facing walls are still shaded.

Who This Is For

This is a listing for climbers, not a casual scramble. If you don't lead trad routes, you can still admire Harlequin Dome from the Tenaya Lake shoreline or the Tioga Road pullouts — the approach itself crosses exposed granite slab that isn't suited to sneakers-and-a-water-bottle sightseeing. As with many Yosemite cliffs, some routes here can fall under seasonal raptor closures in spring, so check current park climbing-closure listings before you go.
