Hetch Hetchy Viewpoint

Hetch Hetchy Viewpoint sits about 3.4 trail miles from the White Wolf trailhead, a short northward walk that ends at a clearing looking into the upper Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne. It shares its first few miles with one of Yosemite's toughest backpacking routes, but you don't need to take on that whole trip to reach this overlook.

Getting There

From White Wolf (7,900 feet), the trail follows a wide, smooth old fire road for about two miles, then settles into gentle ups and downs. Harden Lake sits 2.9 miles in, a 300-foot descent the whole way, on an easy grade. At the junction near the lake, bear left (the right fork just dead-ends at the lake) and continue roughly another half mile, dropping down a few switchbacks to the viewpoint clearing. Round trip works out to about 7 miles with modest elevation change.

What You'll See

The view opens northwest across the canyon's lower stretch, though trees block the sightline toward peaks to the northeast. This isn't a view of Hetch Hetchy Reservoir itself, which sits much farther west and out of sight. The trail keeps descending well past this point, eventually dropping 3,000 feet to Pate Valley and continuing toward Piute Creek, a separate multi-day trip of about 33 miles round trip with roughly 6,900 feet of elevation gain, numbers that describe the full backpacking route, not this day hike. Harden Lake itself runs shallow and unremarkable by late summer, but it's a pleasant stop along the way.

Good to Know

• No permit needed for a day hike to the viewpoint. Overnight stays anywhere past Harden Lake require a wilderness permit.
• Most of the route is exposed to sun, so plan accordingly and start early in summer.
• White Wolf trailhead parking is limited during peak season.
