Higher Cathedral Rock

Higher Cathedral Rock is the tallest of the three Cathedral Rocks, a cluster of cliffs and spires on the south wall of Yosemite Valley near the park's western entrance, facing El Capitan across the valley floor. Despite its name, this isn't a maintained hiking trail — reaching the 6,644-foot summit means an unmaintained, exposed scramble that's really climbers' and peak-baggers' terrain, not a casual walk.

What the Route Actually Involves

The standard approach starts at the Cathedral Rocks pullout on Southside Drive and covers roughly 4.8 miles round-trip with about 4,800 feet of elevation gain. There's no official trail — parties follow a faint climbers' path and game trail through manzanita brush, ascending the "Gunsight" notch between Lower and Middle Cathedral Rocks. That section is rated Class 4, exposed enough that most people use a rope or the fixed lines already in place, followed by more scrambling over polished, sometimes moss-covered slabs to the final summit.

A Landmark for Climbers, Not Day Hikers

Higher Cathedral Rock has been a proving ground for Yosemite climbers since some of the Sierra's earliest serious rock climbing in the 1930s. Its faces hold classic multi-pitch routes, including the NE Buttress (5.9) and Braille Book (5.8), both popular with parties looking for quieter walls than the Valley's more crowded formations.

If you're an experienced scrambler or climber comfortable with route-finding and exposure, it's a rewarding objective with valley views most visitors never see. If you're after a straightforward day hike, this isn't it — save it for the trails built for that.
