Higher Cathedral Spire

A 400-foot granite spire above the Valley — for climbers, not hikers.

About

Higher Cathedral Spire is a freestanding granite tower on the south wall of Yosemite Valley, and there's no hiking trail to its summit — the top is reached only by roped, multi-pitch rock climbing. It's one of the range's earliest big-wall objectives, first climbed in 1934 by Sierra Club climbers Jules Eichorn, Bestor Robinson, and Richard Leonard after an initial attempt the year before.

The Regular Route

The standard line to the top is the Regular Route, rated 5.9 over five pitches and roughly 400 feet of climbing. Pitch two carries a stiffer reputation than its grade suggests, with two 5.9 options — a bulge followed by easier climbing to the left, or the original line straight up and left under a small roof.

Getting There

Climbers approach via the Spires Gully west of the formation, a scramble that typically takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on load and pace. From the summit patio, the view takes in Cathedral Rocks, El Capitan, and Three Brothers to the west and north, and Sentinel Rock to the east.

This is a technical objective for parties with multi-pitch trad experience and a full rack — not a scramble or day hike for general visitors.
