Inspiration Point

Inspiration Point starts on the uphill side of Wawona Road, directly across from the Tunnel View parking area, and it gets to work right away — the first half-mile or so does most of the climbing before the grade eases up. It's an out-and-back of about 2.6 miles round trip with roughly 990 feet of elevation gain, a solid hour or two depending on your pace.

What's at the top

The trail levels out on a flat granite shelf overlooking Yosemite Valley, framed by trees — a calmer alternative to the crowds at Tunnel View just below, even if the view itself is less wide open. A lower shelf a short scramble beneath the main spot gives a more unobstructed look at the valley floor. About 0.6 miles in, the route crosses the old stagecoach road that once carried visitors into the valley before the modern highway existed.

• Dogs are not permitted on this trail
• Food-storage lockers are at the trailhead; nearest restrooms and food are at Bridalveil Fall and Yosemite Village
• Connects into the Pohono Trail system, so hikers wanting more can continue toward Old Inspiration Point, Crocker Point, Dewey Point, or all the way to Glacier Point
