Liberty Cap

Liberty Cap is the massive rounded granite dome that rises directly above Nevada Fall in Yosemite Valley, wedged between Mt. Broderick and the approach to Half Dome. It climbs to 7,080 feet in elevation, roughly 1,700 feet above the base of Nevada Fall, and most visitors experience it not by hiking to the top but by walking directly beneath it on the John Muir Trail.

The View From the Trail

You don't need to leave the established path to appreciate Liberty Cap. Hikers on the Mist Trail and John Muir Trail get a close-up view of its sheer face as they climb past Nevada Fall toward Little Yosemite Valley and Half Dome. The Panorama Trail from Glacier Point and the standard Half Dome day hike both frame Liberty Cap against Half Dome and the valley floor — it's one of the more dramatic backdrops on the whole route.

Reaching the Summit

There's no maintained trail to the top. Getting to the actual summit means leaving the John Muir Trail and scrambling an unofficial route up a gully on the dome's northeast side — a steep, off-trail boulder-hop over broken granite, best left to experienced hikers comfortable with exposed terrain and route-finding. Liberty Cap's granite faces also carry multi-pitch technical rock climbing routes, a separate undertaking entirely from the summit scramble and strictly for roped climbers.

Because it sits right along the approach to Half Dome, Liberty Cap is easy to fold into a longer day in the park — just treat the summit itself as an add-on for confident scramblers, not a side trip for casual hikers.
