Lukens Lake Trailhead

Lukens Lake is one of the easiest payoffs on Tioga Road — a 1.6-mile round-trip hike that climbs through mixed conifer forest, tips over a low saddle, and drops you at a small lake wrapped in open meadow. Budget 1-2 hours for the whole thing, elevation gain is a modest 200 feet, and there's no permit or lottery involved — just park and walk.

What to expect on the trail

The trailhead sits directly on Tioga Road, about two miles east of the White Wolf turnoff, with a vault toilet and animal-proof food lockers on site. Expect the trail to run wet and muddy into early August as meadow snowmelt drains through it — park staff ask hikers to walk straight through the mud rather than skirt the edges, since cutting new paths damages the fragile meadow. By July the payoff is shooting stars and other wildflowers blooming thick around the shoreline.

Good to know before you go

• Seasonal access only — Tioga Road typically opens late May or early June and closes after the season's first real snowfall, sometimes not until November.
• No pets or bikes on this trail, standard across Yosemite's wilderness trails.
• Overnight parking at the trailhead is prohibited after October 15.
