Marmot Dome

Marmot Dome rises east of Fairview Dome in the high granite country near Tuolumne Meadows, linked to its neighbor by a ridge called Razor Back and reaching roughly 9,280 feet. There's no maintained hiking trail here — climbers reach the base by following the Tenaya Lake Trail and picking up a cairn-marked use-trail that splits off toward the dome. This is a climbing destination, not a signed day-hike.

Mountain Project documents six established routes on Marmot Dome, mostly moderate multi-pitch trad lines on clean, low-angle granite typical of the Tuolumne domes. Cowboy Marmot, a 5-pitch 5.8, is the highest-rated line here; Easy Day (5.5) offers a gentler introduction, while Golden Age (5.10-), Green Archistan and Serious Shoes (both 5.9), and Tour De Marmot (5.8) round out the area. Routes sit on north-facing slabs, which keep them shaded and cooler through early morning and late afternoon.

Getting There

Access starts from the Tuolumne Meadows area, reached via Tioga Road — a seasonal route that closes with the first heavy snow and typically doesn't reopen until late spring or early summer. Park at either the Fisherman's Trail pullout or the Pothole Dome parking area, cross the road to pick up the Tenaya Lake Trail, and watch for cairns marking the climbers' path. Bring your own rope, rack, and route-finding sense — nothing here is patrolled or signed beyond the cairns.
