Middle Brother

Middle Brother is the middle summit of the Three Brothers, a trio of granite peaks rising from the north wall of Yosemite Valley just east of El Capitan. The Ahwahneechee people called the formation Kom-po-pai-zes — "mountains with heads like frogs when ready to leap" — and its English name dates to 1851, when the Mariposa Battalion captured three sons of Chief Tenaya near its base.

Where to see it

There's no maintained trail up Middle Brother itself. The classic view is from the Valley floor along Southside Drive, especially the Cathedral Picnic Area, where all three peaks stack above the trees in a single sightline John Muir once ranked among the most striking in the park. Hikers wanting to stand on top of a Brother instead aim for Eagle Peak, the tallest of the three, reached via the Upper Yosemite Falls Trail from Camp 4 — a full-day round trip of roughly 12 miles and over 3,500 feet of climbing.

A formation still on the move

Middle Brother is one of the more geologically active corners of the Valley. On March 10, 1987, its base shed the largest recorded rockfall in Yosemite's history — an estimated 1.5 million tons of granite that buried Northside Drive and closed it for several months. Smaller rockfalls have followed since, a reminder that the cliffs below Middle Brother are still actively reshaping the Valley floor.
