Mono Dome

Mono Dome is a 10,622-foot summit rising above Lee Vining in the Hoover Wilderness portion of Inyo National Forest, just east of the Yosemite high country near Tioga Pass. There's no maintained trail to the top — reaching it means cross-country travel over open slopes and meadow, which makes this a route for hikers comfortable navigating without signage rather than a casual afternoon walk.

Getting There

The approach typically starts from a 4WD road that ends near a meadow below neighboring Lee Vining Peak. From there, hikers strike out cross-country across forested terrain to reach Mono Dome's open summit slopes. Many parties combine the climb with Lee Vining Peak (11,690 feet) and nearby Canyon Peak as a single multi-summit day, since all three share the same approach.

What to Expect

• No official trailhead or trail markers — bring a map, compass or GPS, and off-trail navigation experience.
• Significant elevation gain over rocky and forested terrain, best suited to intermediate-to-advanced scramblers.
• Summit views take in Mono Lake to the north, Mount Dana to the south, and the Yosemite high country to the west.
