Mono Meadow Trailhead

Mono Meadow Trailhead sits on the south side of Glacier Point Road, about 10.5 miles east of the Chinquapin junction, at roughly 7,300 feet. It's one of the least-trafficked trailheads in this part of the park, mainly because the road up to it only stays open for part of the year. From the parking area, the trail drops steeply through forest before opening onto Mono Meadow itself — a lush, boggy stretch that holds water well into summer, with logs laid across the creek to help you keep your boots dry.

What to Expect

Most day-hikers turn around soon after reaching the meadow — a short, easy out-and-back. Keep going and it becomes a real haul: Hiking Project lists the full route at roughly 5 miles one-way with about 820 feet of elevation gain, rated intermediate, as it continues toward Buena Vista Creek and Yosemite's backcountry. That stretch sees far more backpackers than casual hikers. A short walk past the meadow's east end opens onto a clearing with views of the Clark Range, Mount Starr King, and the back side of Half Dome.

Getting There and When to Go

• Trailhead: south side of Glacier Point Road, about 10.5 miles east of Chinquapin (Highway 41)
• Season: Glacier Point Road is snow-covered much of the year and typically opens in June, closing again by late October or November — check current conditions before you go
• Parking: small lot, rarely full; animal-proof food storage is on site
• Wildlife: deer, black bears, and grouse are common; wildflowers peak in June and July

The return trip climbs back to the trailhead, so the steepest part of the whole hike comes right at the end — pace yourself accordingly.
