Moraine Dome

Moraine Dome is a granite dome rising above the Merced River along the backcountry corridor between Little Yosemite Valley and the Sunrise/Merced Lake junction. There's no dedicated trailhead or summit trail here — hikers on the John Muir Trail pass directly beneath it on the way toward Half Dome, Clouds Rest, or Merced Lake, and the dome itself is a recognizable landmark rather than a marked destination.

How It Got Its Name

The dome's slopes still carry debris left by the ancient Merced Glacier — lateral moraines visible on its flanks that give the formation its name. It's one of the more direct places in the park to see how thoroughly glaciers reshaped this section of canyon, standing roughly 1,900 feet above the Merced River at an elevation near 8,000 feet.

Reaching It

Access starts at Happy Isles, following the John Muir Trail past Vernal and Nevada Falls into Little Yosemite Valley, then continuing along the same corridor used by backpackers heading to Sunrise High Sierra Camp, Clouds Rest, or Merced Lake. Moraine Dome sits along this stretch — a natural landmark and rest point rather than a hike with its own beginning and end.

• Best suited for: backpackers already on the Half Dome, Clouds Rest, or Merced Lake corridor

Reaching the actual summit means leaving the maintained trail for cross-country travel on open granite — plan for that only if you're comfortable with off-trail route-finding, not as a casual detour.
