Old Big Oak Flat Road Trail

Before Highway 120 existed, this dirt road was one of the main ways into Yosemite Valley. Built as a toll road, it carried traffic from the north until it was judged too dangerous to maintain and closed in the 1940s. Rockfall has since torn up sections of the old grade, and today it survives as an unmaintained route climbing straight up the valley's north wall.

A Road With History

Old Big Oak Flat Road predates the modern park highways entirely. Before Highway 120, 140, and 41 were built, this was the primary access road into Yosemite Valley from the north, requiring constant realignment and repair to stay passable. It was eventually abandoned when the danger and cost of upkeep outweighed its usefulness, and rockslides have continued to reshape it ever since.
