Polly Dome rises directly across Tioga Road from Olmsted Point, its bare granite back arcing for more than two miles along the north shore of Tenaya Lake. Unlike the maintained, signed trails elsewhere in the park, reaching the top here means picking your own line up open rock — a straightforward but genuine off-trail undertaking, not a casual stroll.
Hiking the Summit
There's no built trail to the top of Polly Dome. Hikers comfortable with off-trail granite travel follow class 2 walking routes up the dome's back side, with roughly 1,300 to 1,750 feet of elevation gain depending on the line, topping out near 9,800 feet. Solid route-finding, sturdy footwear, and confidence on exposed, low-angle slab are essential.
Stately Pleasure Dome, for Climbers
The dome's lake-facing apron is known informally among climbers as Stately Pleasure Dome, one of the Tuolumne Meadows area's most popular slab-climbing walls. Several class 5 multi-pitch routes rise directly above the water, drawing rope-and-rack climbers rather than day hikers.
Polly Dome Lakes, at the Base
Don't confuse the dome with the separate, maintained Polly Dome Lakes Trail, which starts at the Murphy Creek Trailhead near Tenaya Lake and covers about 5.5 miles round trip to a cluster of granite-bound lakes at the dome's foot — a good option if you want the scenery without the scramble.
