Shuteye Peak rises to 8,355 feet in the Sierra National Forest south of Yosemite, and its summit holds the oldest fire lookout site in the Sierra Nevada — a lookout post established in the early 1900s, with the current tower dating to 1957 and still staffed by the Forest Service during fire season. The climb trades distance for elevation: a bare granite dome, full sun, and some of the widest views in the Sierra National Forest.
Getting There
The route starts off Beasore Road, part of the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway out of North Fork, then follows rougher spur roads toward the peak. How far you hike depends on how far you can drive: with a high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicle you can reach an upper trailhead and finish the climb in well under four miles round trip. Without one, plan on a longer day — hikers starting from lower access points report round trips in the 10-to-13-mile range, with roughly 2,400 to 2,900 feet of elevation gain depending on the starting point.
What's at the Top
The summit is exposed quartz monzonite granite with little soil, little shade, and no reliable water source. The payoff is a working fire lookout tower and a panorama running from the Minarets and Ritter Range in the north down to the San Joaquin River canyon and Fresno foothills in the south. AllTrails rates the route hard, and the lookout is one of only a handful in California still staffed each fire season.
When to Go
The best window is June through October, after snow clears the access roads and before it returns. Outside that window, both the drive and the trail can be difficult or impassable.
