Snow Creek Trailhead
Yosemite Valley's steepest trail, switchbacking into Tenaya Canyon.
About
Snow Creek Trailhead sits at Mirror Lake in eastern Yosemite Valley, reached via the free Valley Visitor Shuttle (stop #17) or a short walk past Mirror Lake itself. From there, the Snow Creek Trail climbs straight out of the Valley floor into Tenaya Canyon on a relentless run of switchbacks, gaining about 2,700 feet over the course of a 9.4-mile round trip — a grade that's earned it a reputation as one of the steepest maintained trails in the park.
What to expect
The first mile is paved and open to leashed pets, bicycles, and strollers; past that point all three are prohibited and the trail turns to dirt and switchbacks in earnest. As you climb, the views open up across Tenaya Canyon toward Half Dome, the Quarter Domes, and Clouds Rest. A footbridge near Snow Creek itself makes a sensible turnaround point for hikers who want the views without committing to the full grade up to the rim.
