South Whizz Dome

South Whizz Dome is a granite dome in Yosemite's Tuolumne Meadows high country, sitting around 8,880 feet along Tioga Road between Daff Dome and Polly Dome, and usually mentioned in the same breath as its neighbor, North Whizz Dome. This is climbing terrain, not a maintained hiking trail — there's no trailhead sign or summit path for sightseers, just a cairned climber's route to the base of the wall.

The Approach

From a pullout on Tioga Road, a subtly cairned use-trail leads to the dome in roughly 15 minutes of mostly flat walking. It's an easy walk in by Tuolumne standards — the climbing itself is what demands real preparation.

What's on the Rock

All the routes sit on a southwest-facing wall that catches sun from roughly 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., making South Whizz Dome a good pick on cooler high-country days. Mountain Project documents 23 named routes, including well-regarded single-pitch sport lines like Shadow Warriors and Super Sonic, alongside older, sparsely-bolted routes such as Body and Soul and Blackout that reflect Tuolumne's early bolting-ethics debates. Because the dome sits back from the highway and isn't visible from the road, it draws noticeably less traffic than climbs at Lembert or Pywiack.

• This is a climbing destination, not a general hiking trail — come with a rack, rope skills, and current route beta.
• Some of the older routes here are known for long run-outs between bolts; know a route's reputation before you commit.
• There's no signage on the dome itself, so bring a guidebook or Mountain Project topo.
