Stanford Point

Stanford Point sits on the south rim of Yosemite Valley, reached by hiking the Pohono Trail out from the McGurk Meadow trailhead on Glacier Point Road. It's the westernmost of three connected overlooks — along with Dewey Point and Crocker Point — strung together on a long rim traverse with sweeping views down into the valley.

Getting There

The hike starts at the McGurk Meadow trailhead, about 7.6 miles up Glacier Point Road, where a small parking area and food-storage lockers mark the start. From there the trail crosses McGurk Meadow, then climbs to meet the Pohono Trail along the rim. Continuing out to Dewey Point, Crocker Point, and finally Stanford Point and back runs about 10.5 miles round trip, starting from a trailhead elevation near 6,900 feet; Stanford Point itself sits at 6,659 feet. Yosemitehikes.com rates it medium difficulty — long in distance, gentle in grade.

What You'll See

Being the farthest point along the rim traverse, Stanford Point sees noticeably lighter foot traffic than Dewey or Crocker. From the edge, you get clear views down to the valley floor and toward Bridalveil Fall, without the crowds that gather at the more accessible overlooks.

Good to Know

• Glacier Point Road is only open once it's plowed, typically from late May or June through October or November depending on snowpack — check current NPS conditions before you go.
• The rim here is unfenced and exposed. Keep well back from the edge, especially with kids.
• There's no water source along this stretch of trail, so carry what you'll need for the full 10.5 miles.
