Turtleback Dome

Turtleback Dome is the hike most people driving Wawona Road never notice — a gated service road just south of Tunnel View that climbs to open granite slabs with a view of Yosemite Valley rivaling the famous overlook below, minus the crowds.

Trail Details

The route runs about 1.2 miles round trip with roughly 350 feet of elevation gain, and most hikers are up and back in under an hour. It follows a paved-but-closed service road — smooth underfoot, no scrambling — up to a cluster of communication towers, then a short unmarked stretch of use-trail leads out onto the open rock.

Getting There

• Trailhead is on Wawona Road (Highway 41), about 2 miles south of Tunnel View
• Small pullout parking; no facilities at the trailhead
• Gate blocks vehicle access — the road is hikers-only from there

What You'll See

The slabs at the top sit roughly 800 feet higher than Tunnel View, giving a similar sweep of the Valley — El Capitan, Half Dome, and Bridalveil Fall — from a quieter, higher vantage. In spring, watch the gravelly pockets on the dome for the Yosemite lewisia, a rare wildflower that blooms as the snowpack recedes. The final slabs are open and unfenced, so keep an eye on kids and pets near the edges.
