Yosemite Creek Trailhead

Yosemite Creek Trailhead sits on the south side of Tioga Road, directly across from the Ten Lakes trailhead and a short walk from Yosemite Creek Campground. It's a quieter way into the high country than anything starting from the valley floor — most likely to appeal to hikers heading toward the top of Yosemite Falls or backpackers pushing further into the backcountry, since Tioga Road only opens once the winter snowpack clears.

The hike to Yosemite Falls

From the trailhead, the route follows Yosemite Creek south through pine forest and open meadow before dropping toward the north rim of Yosemite Valley, ending at the brink of Yosemite Falls with views across to Half Dome, North Dome, and El Capitan. Round trip to the overlook and back runs close to 12 miles with about 1,400 feet of elevation gain, rated a hard day hike that takes most parties 5 to 6 hours.

• Animal-proof food storage boxes at the trailhead
• Reachable only while Tioga Road is open — typically late May or June through October, depending on snow
• Overnight parking at this lot ends October 15 each year

Before you go

Bikes and pets aren't permitted on the trail. A wilderness permit is required only if you're camping overnight in the backcountry — day hikes to the falls overlook and back don't need one. The final approach to the rim drops steeply with real exposure near the edge, so watch your footing and keep well back from the brink.
