Yosemite Falls Trailhead
The starting point for two of the Valley's best waterfall hikes
About
The Yosemite Falls Trailhead sits near Camp 4 on the Valley floor, reached by a short walk along the Valley Loop Trail or a stop on the free shuttle (stop 7). It's the starting point for the trail that climbs the Valley's north wall toward the top of Yosemite Falls, and from this same trailhead you can choose a short overlook hike or the full climb to the rim.
Two Hikes From One Trailhead
Columbia Rock is the shorter option: a 2-mile round trip with about 1,000 feet of elevation gain, rated moderate, usually taking 2 to 3 hours. It's a good turnaround point if you want valley views without the full commitment. The complete Upper Yosemite Falls trail continues from there to 7.2 miles round trip with roughly 2,700 feet of gain, rated strenuous, and generally takes 6 to 8 hours. Both routes gain elevation right away through a series of switchbacks, with little flat ground before the climbing starts.
Trail Conditions
The tread is well maintained but rocky, and loose footing is the main cause of the sprained ankles and knee injuries reported on this trail — take the switchbacks at an even pace rather than cutting between them, which also erodes the trail surface. There's no water source anywhere on the route: the park service recommends about a gallon (4 quarts) per person for the hike to Upper Falls. The trail stays open year-round, but the upper switchbacks can ice over or disappear under snow in winter, and the waterfall itself typically slows well before late summer as snowmelt tapers off.
Safety Near the Falls
Start early to avoid midday heat on the exposed switchbacks. If you reach the top, stay away from the creek above the falls — the current there feeds directly into the drop, and wading or swimming above the falls has led to fatal accidents in the park's history. Check the Yosemite Falls webcam or a visitor center for current flow and trail conditions before you set out.
