The four ways into Yosemite are not interchangeable. The Arch Rock entrance sits 11 miles from Yosemite Valley, about 20 minutes of driving. The Tioga Pass entrance sits 74 miles out, roughly two hours.

Same park. Same entrance fee. Completely different day.

\n\n

Choosing a gate off a map app without knowing that is how visitors lose a morning. Yosemite does not have one address, and it does not have one front door.

\n\n

The Park Is Bigger Than the Postcard

\n\n

Yosemite covers 747,956 acres, which works out to 1,169 square miles. Nearly 95 percent of that is designated Wilderness. No roads, no cars, no shortcuts across it.

\n\n

Almost every photo anyone has seen of this park comes from one small part of it. Yosemite Valley holds El Capitan, Half Dome, Yosemite Falls, and most of the lodging. It is also the part that fills first on a summer Saturday.

\n\n

The National Park Service splits the rest into six more areas. Hetch Hetchy sits in the northwest corner. Wawona and Mariposa Grove sit near the south end. Glacier Point looks down on the Valley from the rim above it. Crane Flat sits where the two Highway 120 roads meet. Tuolumne Meadows and Tioga Road run east across the high country.

\n\n

Those areas are hours apart by car. A single page showing all of them makes them look adjacent. They are not, and a trip planned on that assumption falls apart by lunch.

\n\n

This is the part a printed park map hides well. Scale bars get ignored. The distance from the Valley floor to the Tioga Pass gate is longer than the drive from Fresno to the South Entrance. Two dots an inch apart on paper can be a two-hour commitment on pavement.

\n\n

Four Entrances, Four Very Different Drives

\n\n

Five entrance stations serve the park, and the Park Service publishes the distance from each one to Yosemite Valley. The spread between them is the single most useful number on any Yosemite map.

Arch Rock, Highway 140, reached through Merced and El Portal: 11 miles to the Valley, about 20 minutes
Big Oak Flat, Highway 120 west, reached through Manteca and Groveland: 25 miles, about 45 minutes
South Entrance, Highway 41, reached through Fresno and Oakhurst: 35 miles, about an hour
Tioga Pass, Highway 120 east, reached through Lee Vining: 74 miles, about two hours, seasonal

Arch Rock is the closest gate to the Valley by a wide margin. It follows the Merced River, stays low, and stays open through winter. That combination makes Highway 140 the most reliable approach in bad weather.

\n\n

Tioga Pass is the outlier in every direction. It crosses the Sierra crest, it is the only entrance on the eastern side, and it is closed for roughly half the year. Anyone routing through it in April is routing through a locked gate.

\n\n

The Hetch Hetchy entrance is a special case worth understanding. It is a real entrance station, but it does not lead to the Valley in any practical sense. It leads to Hetch Hetchy and stops there.

\n\n

Moving between entrances is its own trap. There is no quick connector road linking one gate to another inside the park. Getting from the South Entrance to Big Oak Flat means driving through the Valley or looping outside the boundary entirely. Two entrances that look close on the map can be a ninety-minute transfer.

\n\n

Distance from home matters as much as distance from the gate. The Park Service publishes drive times to Yosemite Valley from the major cities people actually start from.

\n\n

Fresno: 94 miles, about 2 hours 15 minutes
Sacramento: 160 miles, about 4 hours
San Francisco: 195 miles, 4 to 5 hours
Los Angeles: 313 miles, about 6 hours
Las Vegas: 399 miles, about 8 hours, and only when Tioga Road is open

\n\n

The Corridor You Drive In On Decides the Trip

\n\n

Each entrance has its own string of towns leading up to it. Those towns hold the lodging, the gas, and the dinner options. They do not connect to each other in any convenient way.

\n\n

South, Highway 41: Fish Camp closest to the gate, Oakhurst as the larger service town behind it
West, Highway 140: El Portal closest, with Mariposa and Midpines further down the corridor
Northwest, Highway 120 west: Groveland and Buck Meadows, with Big Oak Flat at the corridor's edge
East, Highway 120 east: Lee Vining only, and only while Tioga Road is open

\n\n

The Highway 41 corridor carries most traffic arriving from Fresno and Southern California. It also feeds Mariposa Grove and Wawona, which makes it the efficient choice for a sequoia-focused trip.

\n\n

The Highway 140 corridor wins on reliability. Year-round access and the shortest final drive make it the practical winter route, and the only one that does not climb over anything.

\n\n

The Highway 120 west corridor is the standard approach from Sacramento and the northern Bay Area. It reaches Crane Flat first, which puts Tuolumne Meadows within reach without crossing the Valley.

\n\n

The Highway 120 east corridor has exactly one gateway town. Mammoth Lakes and June Lake sit further south on Highway 395. Those are a separate Eastern Sierra destination, not Yosemite gateway towns, and booking one as a base adds hours nobody planned for.

\n\n

Booking lodging in the wrong corridor is the most expensive version of this mistake. A room 40 minutes from the gate on one highway can be three hours from the trailhead on another. Confirm which entrance a hotel actually serves before confirming the reservation.

\n\n

Wawona is the exception to the whole pattern. It sits inside the park on the Highway 41 corridor, with a historic hotel and the Yosemite History Center. Plan it as part of the south cluster rather than as a town outside the gates.

\n\n

What Each Region Is Actually For

\n\n

Seven regions, and they pair up in ways the map does not show. Yosemite Valley and Glacier Point are the clearest example. One is the floor, the other is the rim directly above it, and the drive between them takes about an hour on Wawona Road.

\n\n

The Valley is the waterfalls, the big walls, the meadows, and the crowds. It stays open by car year-round. Anyone with one day should spend it here and accept that. Glacier Point delivers the reverse angle, with Half Dome, Yosemite Falls, and the high country lining up from a single overlook.

\n\n

Wawona and Mariposa Grove form the south cluster. The grove is the largest in the park, with more than 500 mature sequoias. Most visitors reach it on a free shuttle rather than by car. Wawona adds lodging and history a short drive north of it.

\n\n

Crane Flat and Tuolumne Meadows share the Highway 120 spine. Crane Flat is a forested meadow area about 16 miles from the Valley, roughly 30 minutes of driving. It sits at the junction of the two 120 roads. Tuolumne Meadows is the open sub-alpine country along the Tuolumne River, further east on Tioga Road. It reads as a genuinely different park from the Valley, and it is only available in summer.

\n\n

Hetch Hetchy stands alone in the northwest corner. It holds a reservoir in a granite valley and gets a fraction of the Valley's traffic. The road opens at sunrise and closes at sunset, and it shuts entirely during snow or when overnight snow is forecast. Visitors willing to trade famous views for empty trails tend to end up here.

\n\n

The grouping is the useful takeaway. Four clusters, not seven scattered destinations. A trip that picks one cluster per day works. A trip that hops between three of them spends its time in the car.

\n\n

The Seasons Redraw the Map

\n\n

Two of the park's most photographed roads are seasonal. The usable map in January looks nothing like the one in July.

\n\n

Tioga Road typically opens to vehicles in late May or June and closes sometime in November. Plowing usually starts around April 15. Snowpack decides the rest of it. In the record year of 2023, crews did not clear the Olmsted Point avalanche zone until June 21.

\n\n

That single closure removes the entire eastern half of the park's road network. Tuolumne Meadows, Olmsted Point, Tenaya Lake, and the Tioga Pass entrance all go with it. A winter visitor from Nevada does not take a shortcut over the crest, they drive around the whole range.

\n\n

Glacier Point Road runs a similar calendar, roughly late May through October or November. From mid-December through March it is groomed for cross-country skiing past Badger Pass Ski Area. Reaching Glacier Point in winter means skiing 10.5 miles each way.

\n\n

Mariposa Grove Road runs its shuttle from about April 15 through November 30, with dates that shift year to year. Only vehicles with disability placards drive in directly.

\n\n

Season changes what is worth driving to, not just what is reachable. Waterfall flow peaks around May and June on Sierra snowmelt, and many falls drop to a trickle or run dry by late summer. A Valley-centered trip built around waterfalls belongs in spring. Wildfire smoke is the other seasonal variable, a recurring risk across the Sierra from roughly July through October. Neither one shows up on a map, and both change which region deserves the day.

\n\n

As of the Park Service's August 3, 2026 conditions update, every park road is open. Several carry construction delays. Hazard tree removal on Glacier Point Road adds about 15 minutes between 8 am and 4 pm. Fire safety work on Big Oak Flat Road adds roughly 15 minutes on weekdays. Road status changes fast here, so check the official conditions page the morning of the drive rather than the week before.

\n\n

Getting Around Once You Are Inside

\n\n

Parking in Yosemite Valley is the real bottleneck, not the driving. The free shuttle system exists to solve exactly that problem, and it works better than most visitors expect.

\n\n

The Valleywide shuttle reaches every stop in the Valley, including lodges, campgrounds, and trailheads. Buses arrive every 12 to 22 minutes, from 7 am to 10 pm. The East Valley shuttle covers Yosemite Village, Curry Village, the Pines campgrounds, and the eastern trailheads. It runs every 8 to 12 minutes on the same hours.

\n\n

The system rewards one decision made early. Park once, at Yosemite Village or Curry Village, then ride for the rest of the day. Both routes stop at the Welcome Center, so orientation and the first trailhead are on the same line. Circling the Valley loop hunting for a closer space is how visitors burn an hour on a road they already drove.

\n\n

Free seasonal shuttles also serve Mariposa Grove, Tuolumne Meadows from mid-June through early September, and Badger Pass in winter. Skipping the car entirely is possible through YARTS, the regional bus. It runs year-round on Highway 140, summers on Highway 41 and Highway 120 west, and July through September on Highway 120 east.

\n\n

Entry itself is simpler in 2026 than it has been in years. The park discontinued its timed entrance reservation system for the season, so no reservation is needed to drive in. Entrance fees still apply, at $35 per private vehicle, $30 per motorcycle, and $20 per person walking or cycling in. A pass covers seven consecutive days. Visitors who are not U.S. residents, aged 16 and over, pay an additional $100 surcharge unless they hold a qualifying annual pass. Entrance stations take cards and mobile payment only.

\n\n

Without a reservation system throttling arrivals, the lines are the trade. The park warns of waits past 60 minutes between 8 am and 5 pm, June through August. Arriving before 8 am is the whole strategy, and it costs nothing.

\n\n

The practical version of all this is short. Pick the corridor first, then the region, then the day. The Yosemite Valley Welcome Center is the right first stop for anyone arriving without a plan.
